One of the first things I did when I got GameMaker:Studio was browsing through its settings menu’s, because that’s were you usually find either the hints to the hidden gems, or the hidden gems themselves.

Here is a short list of settings you should change in GameMaker:Studio to make it even better:

Please note! This list isn’t finished yet. If you have any additions, please leave them below!

Preferences

The preferences can be accesed via File > Preferences.
Note: Some options require you to restart GameMaker:Studio!

General

Change the skin: YoYoGames already changed the skin for GM:HTML5, and now did the same for GM:Studio. Although I’m sure there are people who really like this skin-feature, or even the default skin, I personally prefer a clean and simple layout, like the Standard version of GameMaker has. To get this skin: In the right column you’ll find a list of skins. Select ‘GM8′.

Checkbox number 5: Don’t show the website image in the main window. Now that we’ve changed the skin to this bright look, the black website link in the bottom-left doesn’t look very appealing. Remove it by checking this box.

Show news in default browser. There are a lot of great browsers on the market, but unfortunately, GameMaker:Studio uses Internet Explorer by default to display the news, instead of your default browser. Check this box to use your default browser. Alternatively, uncheck Show news on startup for no news at all.

Scripts and Code

If you open the script editor, you’ll see that even though you are using the old GM8-sking, this editor still looks quite depressing. The right column shows you a list of options to change it’s appearance. Change the following:

Check Enable BOLD on script keywords.

Download this file and save it, and remember its location. Click the “Import” button and import the color settings.

Now you’re skin overhaul should be complete.

GM:HTML5

Do this if you want to set up a local HTML5 server.

Web Browser Location: The location of your default testing browser. So, go to your main drive(probably C:\), Program Files, and find your Browser Application.

IP allowed list: Enter your IP address here.

Android

As I pointed out before, I don’t have access to an Android Phone, so I don’t know if there are some settings here that you’d want to change. So, if you have any experience with this, please respond!
For now, see the Official Guide.

Transparent Background Settings

You can find this under Edit > Transparent Background Settings. Leave the Radio Buttons as they are, but change Color 1 to light gray(rgb (192, 192, 192)), and Color 2 to white.

If you have any additional information, suggestions, or other additions to this list: please comment below!

Good news! YoYoGames’ GameMaker:Studio has finally moved into a (semi-)public beta stage. Today, everyone who bought GameMaker:HTML5 before February 27th, 2012, recieved an email from YoYoGames with a link to the beta.

GameMaker:Studio is an extended version of GameMaker:Standard, and it’ll allow you to export to platforms other than Windows. The list now consists of Macintosh, iOS, Android, HTML5 and of course Windows, but according to this page, other formats will be announced in the future.

I am currently in Canada, and I don’t have any access to a Macintosh or iOS/Android devices, so I will mainly focus on the Windows version: I’ve heard this one has the C++ runner! So expect a post on that, sooner or later.
